Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and Mixed Reality fall under the same family of immersive technologies which have a remarkable effect to alter our perceptions. It is, however, important to note the differences between them as they often come up in the same conversations and are confused with one another.

Virtual Reality

Mixed Reality

Perhaps the most recent development in immersive or reality technologies, mixed reality can be considered as an advanced form of AR, where overlays of information are placed on existing reality but shown through your mixed reality glasses or headsets. The physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real-time.

Desktop Simulation

These simulations can easily be installed and deployed on any PC based computer without the need for other visualization technologies. These types of models offer limited interactivity but are conveniently accessed and are a cheaper alternative to other immersive technology-based simulations.

360° Video

360° degree videos capture real-life footage of every direction simultaneously in a spherical view using an omnidirectional camera such as the Samsung Gear 360. These videos can then be integrated with VR hardware such as Google Cardboard or Google Daydream. Unlike Virtual Reality based content, however, the interactions and mobility are restricted.

Mobile Gamification

Gamification is the usage of game elements to engage and motivate users. Its methods like virtual environment can provide an excellent training ground for employees in the organization.

For better experience and interactivity, try out Samsung’s Oculus platform based Gear VR or Google’s Pixel supported Daydream headsets.

Oculus Go

The Oculus Go is a standalone and wireless VR device making it the most convenient VR Headset in the market. The spatial sound drives built in to the headset directly provide a dramatic and immersive sound experience. Furthermore, popular applications such as Netflix and Hulu, making it the ideal VR device for entertainment purposes. It includes one controller which translates your natural movements in to VR. The interactivity is however limited as compared to the HTC VIVE and Oculus Rift making certain advanced use cases difficult to leverage.

Microsoft Hololens

The Hololens is a pair of mixed reality smart-glasses developed and manufactured by Microsoft. The headset projects various forms of media such as 3D holograms which you can interact with certain motion gestures. It is a standalone device which has a self contained holgraphic computer in-built. Various apps such as Skype are also integrated within the hardware.
